The Science Behind Thorne’s Omega-3: A Must-Have for Longevity

By Shannon Kasun, Neuroscience Specialist

Docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid might be a mouthful to say, but getting enough of these fatty acids is worth the tongue-twister.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids essential for brain health. At CerePro Bioscience, omega-3 is one of our three core supplements because its benefits for the brain are undeniable. And yet, 68% of adults fall short of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) guideline for omega-3 concentrations (Murphy et al., 2021).

DHA is a major component of brain cells membranes, acting like scaffolding to maintain their structure and function. As you age, neurons naturally lose structural integrity, fluidity, and efficiency—factors that contribute to cognitive decline. DHA supplementation helps counteract these age-related cellular changes by reinforcing the physical structure of neurons.

Meanwhile, EPA primarily combats inflammation in the brain, which is a significant driver of cognitive decline and dementia. By reducing neuroinflammation, EPA helps protect long-term brain function.

Omega-3 also supports muscle health, an often-overlooked facet of health that becomes increasingly important with age. Older adults face a high risk of frailty, falls, and fall-related injuries, but omega-3 can help. It increases muscle protein synthesis while decreasing muscle protein breakdown, slowing age-related muscle loss (Therdyothin et al., 2023).

A 2023 study found that dietary omega-3 could lower risk of all-cause dementia by approximately 20% (Wei et al., 2023). Each 0.1 g per day increase in DHA/EPA was associated with an 8-9.9% lower risk of cognitive decline (Wei et al., 2023). Another paper suggested that omega-3 supplementation increased learning, memory, cognitive well-being, and blood flow to the brain (Dighriri et al., 2022). This is just a small glimpse into the vast body of evidence underscoring the absolute importance of omega-3.

At CerePro Bioscience, we believe in supplements that truly support your brain health. That’s why we’ve partnered with Thorne, a leader in science-backed supplements, to make high-quality omega-3 more accessible and affordable for you.

Thorne is a pioneer in the wellness industry, known for its rigorous 30–40 clinical trials per year to ensure the efficacy and safety of its products. Unlike many brands, Thorne manufactures its supplements in-house and tests for over 760 contaminants, including heavy metals.

Thorne also maintains a strict ‘no-list’ of over 50 unacceptable ingredients never used in their products. For example, while many supplement brands use magnesium stearate (an additive that prevents capsules from sticking together during production), Thorne excludes it because it can reduce nutrient bioavailability. Instead of taking shortcuts, Thorne prioritizes purity and efficacy—one of the many reasons it’s an official collaborator of the Mayo Clinic and the trusted supplement provider for the four-time Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Thorne offers Super EPA Pro and Omega-3 with CoQ10, both of which provide a balanced dose of EPA and DHA to support cognitive and overall health.
